State Motto or State Slogan?

It’s easy to confuse a state slogan with a state motto. Many people use them interchangeably, but they are actually two separate things. A state slogan is generally used for advertising purposes in order to stimulate the tourism market. States come up with slogans to try to get people to want to visit the state. State slogans are generally in English and change from time to time. Nebraska’s slogan is: Nebraska, it’s not for everyone.

You may see a state motto on official documents, like some state letterhead. Sometimes a state motto is on the state seal and often posted in courtrooms as a result. Many of them have been state mottos for decades and some of them are on license plates. The mottos are frequently in other languages and use English translations. A very well-known state motto is New Hampshire’s Live Free or Die. If you’re looking for state mottos, this is not the page for that. We have a dedicated page for state mottos to allow for more room for both the state motto and its translation to English in the same table.

US State Nicknames

Like US state mottos, state nicknames can also be relatively old. State nicknames tend to be based on something that is unique or abundant to the state. The gold rush caused a lot of fortune-seeking settlers to migrate to California from other states, which is something California is known for more than other states. As such, California’s nickname is The Golden State.

Similar to California, Nevada is the Silver State. Famous for its peaches, Georgia’s state nickname is the Peach State. Missouri stands out with its nickname, the Show-Me State while Florida is the Sunshine State. These state nicknames not only help tell you something about the state, but they should help you notice how different each state is from others. They each have something unique about them that helps set them apart.
